Dick A. Roper (1842-1890) was born in Carrollton, Alabama, and died in Mobile, Alabama. He moved to Mobile when he was seven years old and remained there for the rest of his life. He enlisted in Company E, 21st Alabama Infantry of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War. Afterward, he went into the hotel and then the real estate business before going into politics in the 1870s, becoming the city assessor and then sheriff of Mobile. He was also a lieutenant colonel of the First Regiment, Alabama State Troops. He married Florence Roper (b. Turner) in 1872. In 1886 he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
