Lydia M. Roaf (1840-1890) was born in Andover, Massachusetts, and died in
Lawrence, Massachusetts. She worked at a wool mill and married Thomas Roaf in Edgartown,
Massachusetts, in 1860. She was the older sister of Calvin A. Frye, Mary Baker Eddy's
personal secretary for over 28 years. Roaf followed her brother to Boston,
Massachusetts, and worked briefly in Eddy's household in 1882. She was a student of
Eddy's, completing the Primary class in 1883 and the Normal class in May 1886. She was a
member of the Christian Scientist Association and the Christian Science Mission and
Dispensary Association.
