James M. Rix (1811-1856) was born in Landaff, New Hampshire, and died in Boston, Massachusetts. He married Mary E. Palmer in Concord, New Hampshire, in 1834. In 1838, he established the Coos County Democrat, a weekly newspaper located in Lancaster, New Hampshire, and was editor until his death. In addition to being an editor, Rix was a politician and lawyer who served as the President of the New Hampshire Senate in 1853.
