Thomas M. Righter (1847-1918) was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania, and died
in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania. He was a coal baron who owned two coal mines and held
interests in several other coal mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. After selling
his coal interests he helped establish utility and transit companies in Mount Carmel. He
was held in high regard by the citizens of Mount Carmel and on the Monday after his
passing, all the stores in Mount Carmel closed for two hours. In early 1886, his wife,
Gertrude H. Righter, became interested in Christian Science.
