George Reuling (1839-1915) was born in Romrod, Germany, and died in
Baltimore, Maryland. He was a renowned optometrist who trained in Vienna, Austria, and
served as a surgeon in the Prussian Army during the Austro-Prussian War (1866). In 1868,
he moved to the United States and in 1869 he was appointed physician-in-chief of the Eye
& Ear Hospital in Baltimore and later served as a professor of eye and ear surgery
at Washington University, a now-defunct medical school in Baltimore. Reuling was a
pioneer in the field of cataract surgery, developing new methods for their removal and
writing extensively on the subject.
