John (b. Johann) C. Reichert (1825-1891) was born in Roigheim, Germany, and died in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1852, he married Sophia W. Reichert (b. Berg) in his hometown. The following year, the couple immigrated to Indianapolis in 1853, then soon after moved to Terre Haute where they remained. Reichert was a Civil War veteran, serving in the 76th Indiana Infantry. After the war, he worked in the shoe trade until 1879, when he switched to insurance. Reichert was involved in his community, becoming a trustee for the town in 1884 and serving for four years. He was also a member of the Benevolent Society, Humboldt Lodge, Goethe Lodge, and the Grand Army of the Republic Veterans' organization. Benjamin J. Donaway gave Reichert as a character reference when he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1886 about obtaining a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
