Henry L. Putnam (1855-1943) was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and
died in Lowell, Massachusetts. His family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, when he was
a boy and he later worked there as a real estate agent. He married Eliza S. Putnam (b.
Howard) in Montreal in 1880. In September 1888, he was a student of Josephine Curtis
Woodbury's, who was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's. Putnam then became a student of
Eddy's, completing the Primary class in February 1889. Putnam had an affair with
Woodbury, and after learning of it, Eddy sent Putnam back to his wife and child in
Montreal. In June 1890, Woodbury bore a child that was suspected to be Putnam's. Putnam
was a chess player and was one of the leading members of the City Club of Boston. He
was, at one time, president of the Montreal Literary Society.
