Daniel Potter (1800-1890) was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and died in
Salem, Massachusetts. He trained as a blacksmith in Salem and owned his own shop in
Salem from 1827 until 1852, as well as a shop in Roxbury, Massachusetts, for two of
those years. He retired from blacksmithing in 1852 and was appointed deputy-sheriff of
Essex County by high-sheriff Frederick Robinson. Potter held the position until January
1887, when he resigned two months shy of his 87th birthday.
