Reed, was an early pioneer of Christian Science in Clinton, Iowa. Pomeroy was best known for his work in the newspaper field, as a writer, editor and owner of several newspapers during his lifetime. Most notably, he was owner and editor of the La Crosse Democrat (Wisconsin) during the Civil War, where he gained notoriety as an outspoken Copperhead. Failed ventures later in life in Chicago and then in Colorado left him nearly penniless at the time of his passing.
