Mary M. Phillips (1770-1868) was born and died in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was a Quaker and married Johnathan Phillips Jr. in Lynn in 1792. She was the mother of Abbie M. Winslow, mother-in-law of Hannah L. Phillips, and a good friend of Mary Baker Eddy's. Eddy befriended the Phillips family in the 1860s, when Thomas Phillips, Mary Phillips' son, managed the boarding house where Eddy and Daniel Patterson were staying at 42 Silsbee Street in Lynn. In November 1864, Eddy joined the Phillips family for Thanksgiving dinner, and the following week she published a vignette of the occasion in a local newspaper, titled "Day After Thanksgiving." Decades later it was reprinted in The Christian Science Journal and her Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896. Eddy remained close with the Phillips family for several years, becoming a frequent visitor to the Phillips home after Patterson deserted her, until practicing and teaching Christian Science began to take up most of her time.
