Edwin J. Phelps (1845-1925) was born in Marshall, Michigan, and died in
Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was a prominent banker who entered the profession at age 12 when
he started work at the Taylor and Wood Bank. In 1884, he organized the Kalamazoo
National Bank, serving as president for 39 years until he resigned in August 1923 to
become chairman of the board of directors. In 1885, Richard Pengelly, a Methodist
minister from Kalamazoo, wrote to Mary Baker Eddy and ordered Phelps a copy of Science
and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
