Ann M. Otis (1841-1923) was born in Franklinville, New York, and died in Olivet, Michigan. She was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, taking Primary (1887), Obstetrics (1888), and Normal (1889) classes. In 1888, Eddy asked Otis to go to Concord, New Hampshire, to found a branch church there. In 1894, Eddy started to receive complaints about healing methods being used by Otis. Towards the end of that year, Eddy's carriage ride was interrupted by a patient of Otis' who had been instructed to do so by Otis in order to be healed. Shortly after, Otis returned to Michigan at Eddy's request. She was one of the First Members of The Mother Church, later known as "Executive Members," who was one of twenty elected to join the original twelve members of the church when it was formed on September 23, 1892. Otis remained a member until her passing; however, Otis appears to have drifted away from organized Christian Science in about 1903.
