George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
and died in West Orange, New Jersey. He was a Union general during the American Civil
War (including commanding general of the United States Army for a short time), civil
engineer, railroad executive, and politician who served as the 24th Governor of New
Jersey from 1878 to 1881. A graduate of The United States Military Academy in West
Point, New York, McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and
later left the Army to work on railroads until the outbreak of the American Civil War.
He is often remembered for organizing the well-trained Union Army of the Potomac.
