Samuel S. Mathews (1847-1910) was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts, and
died in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a Congregational minister who was ordained in 1874
and served as the pastor of the Boylston Church in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of
Boston (1879-1887). In May 1885, at a meeting of Congregational ministers in Boston,
Mathews was critical of Christian Science and his comments were later published in
The Sun, a New York City newspaper.
