John MacFarlane (1841-1897) was born in Huntington, Quebec, Canada, and died in Detroit, Michigan. He was a stationer and book dealer. In 1862 he moved to Detroit and worked first for W. L. Foster & Co. and then for E. B. Smith & Co. before opening his own book and stationery business in Detroit in 1881. MacFarlane became known as one of Mighigan's leading book dealers. He married Mary MacFarlane (b. Stewart) in 1865. She died in 1868, and he married Jane "Jeannie" MacFarlane (b. Schenck) in 1877. In July 1886 MacFarlane wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Based on the records available, we have found no further information concerning his involvement with Christian Science.
