Ellen D. Lyman (1824-1911) was born in Ireland and died in Chicago, Illinois. She immigrated to the United States in 1839 and worked as a milliner. She married Charles L. Gardner in New York, and, after his death fighting in the Civil War in 1861, married William H. Lyman in Chicago in 1869. In 1885, Samuel J. Avery wrote to Mary Baker Eddy asking to subscribe Lyman to The Christian Science Journal. There is no record of Lyman studying with Mary Baker Eddy or joining The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
