James T. Lewis (1819-1904) was born in Clarendon, New York, and died in
Columbia, Wisconsin. He was an attorney and Republican politician who served as
Wisconsin's Lieutenant Governor (1854-1856), Secretary of State (1862-1864), and
Governor (1864-1866). In 1866, he declined his party's re-nomination as governor and
retired from public office in order to focus on his family and law practice. Although he
expressed an interest in Christian Science, there is no record of him studying with Mary
Baker Eddy or uniting with the Church of Christ (Scientist).
