Henry P. Leland (1839-1909) was born in Holliston, Massachusetts, and
died in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was a Civil War veteran, serving in the 7th Cavalry, 3rd
Infantry, and 41st Infantry in Iowa from 1861 to 1865. He enlisted as a Sergeant and was
promoted to Lieutenant. In 1867, in Crete, Illinois, he married Sophie C. Leland (b.
Barrett). The couple moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where Leland worked as a farmer.
Leland's wife wrote to Mary Baker Eddy about her desire to study Christian Science and
heal her mother and brother.
