Annie M. Knott

Annie M. Knott (1851-1941) was born in Stewarton, Scotland, and died in Brookline, Massachusetts. Knott was a Christian Science practitioner and teacher who became the first woman elected to the Christian Science Board of Directors. She became interested in Christian Science in 1884 and studied with Bradford Sherman, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's. After studying with Sherman, she practiced in Detroit, Michigan, before taking the Normal (1887) and the Obstetrical (1888) classes with Mary Baker Eddy. By 1889, Knott had established regular Sunday church services and she would go on to serve as First Reader of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Detroit. Knott joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, in October 1892 and was a member until her passing. In 1898, Eddy appointed Knott as one of the first two women on the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. She served on the Board until 1903, when she joined the editorial staff of the Christian Science periodicals. In 1919, she was elected to the Christian Science Board of Directors, serving until 1934 when she retired to devote her full time to Christian Science healing and teaching.
