George W. Knettle (1849-1889) was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and died in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1857 he moved with his family to Medina, Minnesota, and by 1869 he was living in Minneapolis where he worked for the J. S. Pillsbury & Co. flour mill. He married Mary "Mamie" L. Knettle (b. Case) in Minneapolis in 1881 and became the proprietor of a fruit and confectionary store. Sometime in the early 1880s Knettle became blind and in 1886 received Christian Science treatment from Emma A. Thompson, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's in Minneapolis. In 1889 Knettle was institutionalized in Rochester where he died soon thereafter.
