Emil Kirchgessner (1857-1941) was born in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and died in Alameda County, California. He immigrated to America in 1874 on the ship "Oder." He graduated from the New Jersey Medical College in 1889 and married three times. In 1882, in Boston, he married Ella B. Kirchgessner (b. Dennison). Then in 1892, he married Lillian "Lilly" L. Kirchgessner (b. Heath). She was the stepdaughter of T. C. Gould, of the Sterling-Gould Manufacturing company. They divorced in 1904, after which he married Rose Kirchgessner (b. Jewett). Kirchgessner was a physician, first in South Dakota, then California; and an author, writing texts including Mind over Matter, Preliminary lessons in metaphysics or the science of Christian Healing, and Mental or Christian Healing. Kirchgessner was a member of the Christian Scientist Association in 1883 and 1884. In 1886, Mary Baker Eddy wrote to him about Mind over Matter, regarding plagiarism of her ideas and asking him to desist.
