Joseph A. Iasigi (1848-1917) was born in Massachusetts and died in
Brookline, Massachusetts. He married Marie P. Homer in 1881 and was the Consular Agent
for France in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1873 to 1877 and then the Consul-General for
Turkey in Boston, a position previously held by both his father and brother, from 1883
to 1897. Iasigi failed to account for a trust fund, refused to answer questions, and
fled to New York City, where he was arrested in February 1897 and extradited to Boston.
He was charged with embezzlement of about $220,000. Iasigi pleaded not guilty and was
tried and convicted in November 1897. He was sentenced to 14-18 years at the Charlestown
State Prison in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and was pardoned by Massachusetts Governor
Eben S. Draper in 1909.
