Lucie F. Hinkle (b. Fries) (1852-1940) was born in Winchester, Virginia,
and died in Santa Cruz, California. Sometime before 1870 she moved with her family to
Preston, Missouri, and then, by 1885, to Auburn, California, where she taught literature
at Sierra Normal College. Around 1890 she married Charles D. Hinkle, a merchant. By 1900
they had moved to Santa Cruz, where Charles ultimately became the Mayor, and where they
remained for the rest of their lives. In 1886, an acquaintance sent Lucie a copy of
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
