Matilda Hindman (c.1828-1905) was a prominent suffragist and writer from
Union Township in Washington County, Pennsylvania. She was one of the first women to
receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from a U.S. college when she graduated from Mount
Union College in Alliance, Ohio, in 1860, where she later returned for a time to teach
mathematics. A renowned public speaker, Hindman lectured on the subject of women's
suffrage all over the United States. She was active in both the National Woman Suffrage
Association and the American Woman Suffrage Association and placed special emphasis on
suffragists working with the members and leaders of Christian churches.
