John W. Henney (1842-1926) was born in Manheim, Pennsylvania, and died in
Freeport, Illinois. Considered a pioneer in the manufacturing of buggies and carriages,
he was the founder and president of John W. Henney and Company, as well as the founder
of the Henney Buggy Company. His family moved west in 1848. He began manufacturing
wagons and carriages in Cedarville, Illinois, in 1868, when he married Agnes A. Henney
(b. Bennethum), and he moved the business to Freeport in 1872. He served as president of
the Freeport Board of Education for many years, and was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church. Henney wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1886 to order a copy of
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Based on the records
available, we have found no further information concerning his involvement with
Christian Science.
