Mary E. Hammond (1851-1946) was born and died in Wareham, Massachusetts.
She was a public school teacher for over forty years. In 1885 she studied Christian
Science with Melissa J. Smith, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, and began a Christian
Science practice. She was accepted into Eddy's Primary class in August 1886 but was
unable to attend. In 1888 she wrote to Eddy to inquire about taking the Normal class
from her, but the records do not indicate that she did so. Hammond joined The First
Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 6, 1908.
