Rev. William I. Gill, originally from England, was a Methodist minister who was pastor of a congregation in Lawrence, Massachusetts, when he first became interested in Christian Science. He attended Primary class with Mary Baker Eddy in March of 1886 and in May of that year began serving on a trial basis as assistant pastor to Eddy for the Church of Christ (Scientist). He ultimately left the teachings of Christian Science and resigned as assistant pastor in January of 1887. Gill also served as editor of The Christian Science Journal for a brief period from September 1886 to November 1886.
