Nathan P. Gates (1834-1900) was born in Haymoon, New York, and died in
Rockingham, Vermont. He married Catherine "Kittie" A. Gates (b. Slade) in about 1865.
Gates was a teacher, a Civil War veteran who served for New York, and then a railroad
worker. In 1886, Gates wrote to Mary Baker Eddy that his wife had been receiving
Christian Science treatment from Mrs. W. W. Robbins of New York and received some
benefit. At Mrs. Robbins's suggestion, he wrote to inquire about the logistics and cost
of having Eddy treat his wife.
