Charles H. Foye (1843-1897) was born in Portland, Maine, and died in
Brooklyn, New York. In 1885, he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to inquire about the
possibility of his wife, Mary E. Hale Foye, studying at the Massachusetts Metaphysical
College. Later, in September 1885, Mary E. Hale Foye took Primary class instruction with
Eddy. In 1890, the Foyes moved to Brooklyn, New York, to live with Pamelia J. Leonard
and help with the growth of Christian Science in the area. While there, in August of
that year, their son, Henry, died and Charles H. Foye was subsequently arrested on
charges of criminal negligence for failing to seek medical care. The case was tried
before the grand jury in February 1891. The jury refused to return an indictment, so the
case was dismissed. Foye joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston,
Massachusetts, in April 1896 and was a member until his passing.
