R. G. (Robert Gershom) Fitch (1846-1915) was born in Sheffield,
Massachusetts, and died in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from Williams College
(1870), he embarked on a career in journalism, first working at the
Springfield Republican until 1872, when he joined the
Boston
Post. In 1881, he was promoted to editor-in-chief, a position he held until
1885. In 1886, he was appointed to the Boston Board of Fire Commissioners by Mayor Hugh
O'Brien, a position Fitch held until 1895 when he joined the editorial staff of the
Boston Transcript. Fitch held the position of
associate-editor at the
Boston Transcript until his
passing.
