Hester A. Fairchild (b. Wilkins) (1842-1931) was born in Milton, Vermont,
and died in Oakland, California. In 1865 she married Judd H. Fairchild in Milton. He had
served in Company A, 5th Vermont Infantry of the Union Army in the American Civil War.
After the war he worked as a farmer in Milton, then sometime prior to 1880 they moved to
Forest Township, California, where he became a miner. In the mid-1880s they moved to
Oakland, and he went into the mercantile business. In 1886, Fairchild began writing to
Mary Baker Eddy to order copies of
Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures in bulk for distribution. She joined The First Church of Christ,
Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 1, 1898, and was listed as a
practitioner in
The Christian Science Journal from 1900 until
1921. Fairchild studied Christian Science with Francis J. Fluno and was also a member of
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Oakland.
