
Mary G. Ewing (1867-1949) was born in Quincy, Illinois, and died in
Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Ruth B. Ewing and William G. Ewing, both
students of Mary Baker Eddy's and active in many capacities in the Christian Science
movement in Chicago and Boston, Massachusetts. Ewing began her career as her father's
secretary when he was the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
She then studied Christian Science with her mother and followed in her parents'
footsteps in devoting the rest of her life to Christian Science work. She joined The
First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, on March 31, 1894, and was also a member
and served as Second Reader of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago. Ewing was a
member of the 1910 Normal class in the Board of Education and subsequently became a
Christian Science teacher and lecturer, serving on the Board of Lectureship from 1918 to
1926. She was a trustee of both the Christian Science Pleasant View Home and the
Christian Science Benevolent Association from 1926 to 1931, a member of the Bible Lesson
Committee from 1931 to 1942, and President of The Mother Church in 1933 and 1934. She
was the Clerk of The Mother Church from 1942 to 1946, and taught the Normal class for
the Board of Education in 1946. She was listed as a practitioner in
The
Christian Science Journal from 1907 to 1949.
