Nellie J. Emerson (c.1845-1927) was born in New Hampshire and died in
California. Nellie, along with her husband, William, attended the Primary class taught
by Mary Baker Eddy in Chicago in May 1884. Nellie attended the whole class and William
was present for the last five days. Nellie maintained a healing practice for several
years after the class, while also working at the Chicago Erring Woman's Refuge. Records
suggest that William's involvement with Christian Science was limited to the last five
days of the class. The Emersons divorced in 1891. By 1900, Nellie had abandoned her
healing practice and moved to California where she worked as a sales agent for a
toiletries company. There is no record of Nellie J. Emerson uniting with the Church of
Christ (Scientist).
