Henry Drummond (1851-1897) was born in Stirling, Scotland, and died in
Tunbridge Wells, England. He was a Scottish evangelical author and scholar whose most
influential work was the sermon "The Greatest Thing in the World." In 1877, he became a
lecturer of natural science at Free Church College in Glasgow, and while working at the
College, he wrote
Natural Law in the Spiritual World (1883).
After the book was published, he traveled around the globe lecturing, culminating with
his delivery of the Lowell Lectures in Boston in 1893. These lectures were published
under the title
The Ascent of Man (1894). After returning to
Scotland, he spent most of his time in Glasgow, where despite his failing health, he
continued to write.
