Delavan Dewolf (1845-1927) was born in Frankfort, New York, and died in
Newark, New Jersey. He graduated with BA and MA degrees from Chicago University in 1870
and from Rochester Theological Seminary in 1873. He was ordained in 1874. He briefly
headed a Baptist commission in Brooklyn, New York, before settling in Bristol,
Connecticut, where he served as pastor of the Baptist church for twelve years. From 1886
to 1890 he was the pastor of the Salem, New Jersey, Baptist church. He went on to serve
as secretary and then superintendent of missions of the New Jersey Baptist convention.
He married Amelia B. Dewolf (b. Churchill) in Newark in 1875, and they settled in Newark
in 1891. In 1886 Dewolf learned about Christian Science from M. Anna Osgood, a student
of Mary Baker Eddy's, and thereafter he wrote a letter to Eddy inquiring about possible
terms for himself and his wife to study Christian Science with her, although the record
does not reflect that they subsequently did so.
