David F. Coon (1847-1938) was born in Lima, Ohio, and died in Los Angeles, California. He was a veteran of the American Civil War, serving as Private in the 74th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company H and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization composed of Civil War veterans. He moved to Kansas in 1868 and worked as a merchant and county surveyor. Coon moved to Lydon, Kansas, in 1877. In 1878, he married Mary J. Hoyt in Osage, Kansas, who later passed away in 1883. He then married Jennie S. Gillin in Denver, Colorado, in 1884. Along with his mother-in-law, Estella E. Gillin, Coon practiced Christian Science healing through prayer in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 3, 1899, and was listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as a Christian Science practitioner in Los Angeles in 1904.
