Matthew Clarke (1823-1903) was born in Pennsylvania and died in Chicago,
Illinois. He was a Presbyterian minister. He married Kate W. Mitchell in Crawford, Ohio,
in 1853. In December 1882, he was sent to Norfolk, Virginia, by the United Presbyterian
Board of Missions. The following January, Clarke opened a school for African American
students called the Norfolk Mission College, of which he was principal until the Clarkes
moved to Chicago sometime between 1886 and 1889. Although Clarke's wife and
sister-in-law, Hannah A. Larminie, were both students of Mary Baker Eddy's, we have
found no further information concerning his involvement with Christian Science.
