Maggie F. Chittenden (1838-1911) was born in New York and died in Berkeley, California. She married Ravaud H. Chittenden, a physician, in Woodstock, Illinois, in 1856. She was an army nurse during the American Civil War, when both she and her husband worked together in military hospitals. She was a member of the National Association of Army Nurses. The Chittendens later owned a drugstore together in Lydon, Kansas. Her husband became interested in Christian Science while there, studying with Estella E. Gillin and practicing soon thereafter. It appears as though his interest in Christian Science waned however, and by 1900 they had moved to California, eventually settling in Long Beach where she became a member of the Woman's Relief Corps and of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. Based on the records available, we have found no further information concerning her involvement with Christian Science.
