Stephen A. Chase (1839-1912) was born and died in Fall River, Massachusetts. He married Anna A. Gifford in 1868, who passed away the next year. He married Mary E. McCallum in 1873. He worked as a salesman for his uncle's leather manufacturing firm for many years before becoming involved with Christian Science. Chase was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, completing the Primary class in January 1887. He was a member of the Students' Christian Scientist Association (more formally known as the National Christian Scientist Organization) No. 7, Fall River, Massachusetts. He was one of the First Members of The Mother Church, later known as "Executive Members," who were the original members when the church was formed on September 23, 1892. There were twelve original First Members. Eddy also selected him as one of the first four members of the newly-formed Christian Science Board of Directors and appointed him Treasurer of the Building Fund for the building of the Original Edifice of The Mother Church. Eddy also requested that he, along with 11 other of her students, organize The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. Chase was appointed Treasurer of The Mother Church in 1896, a position which he held until his death. He was listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as a Christian Science practitioner in Fall River from 1903 to 1905 and was a member of the Executive Board of the General Association of Teachers. Chase served the Church for almost 20 years, commuting to Boston or Concord, New Hampshire, from his home in Fall River.
