Joanna M. Bryan (1856-1939) was born in Canada and died in Boston,
Massachusetts. Her family moved to the United States in 1866. She worked as a seamstress
and was a student of Josephine Curtis Woodbury's, who was a student of Mary Baker
Eddy's. Bryan joined the church in the spring of 1886, when Joseph A. Adams preached
several times at the Church of Christ (Scientist) in Boston. Bryan found Adams'
teachings to be in conflict with what she believed to be Christian Science, and she
wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1886 wishing to be removed from church membership. Based on
the records available, we have found no further information concerning her involvement
with Christian Science.
