James J. Brown (1839-1914) was born and died in Hillsboro, Ohio. He was a Civil War veteran, serving in the 24th Ohio Light Artillery. After the war he owned and operated a drug store in Springfield, Ohio. While living in Springfield, he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy, asking for pricing information and expressing an interest in stocking her works in his store.
