George D. Brown (1826-1889) was born in Tompkins County, New York, and died in Jackson, Michigan. He moved with his family to Parma, Michigan, in 1836, and a few years later relocated to nearby Jackson where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1858 he married Celeste S. Brown (b. Scollard) in Jackson. In 1848 Brown opened a bookselling business with Dwight Merriman. It later operated under the name Brown & Carter, which then became Brown & Pilcher. By the mid-1880s Brown was the proprietor of the largest wholesale and retail bookselling and stationery business in central Michigan. In 1886 he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order 10 copies of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures to sell in his store.
