Elmer S. Bessey (1865-1948) was born in Sterling, Pennsylvania, and died in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. In 1897, in Coffeyville, Kansas, he married Anna M. Bessey (b. Moore). Bessey was a postmaster, a lawyer, and served as United States' commissioner in Claremore, then classed as Indian Territory, now part of Oklahoma. He was elected judge of the state court of Oklahoma in 1920. After serving his six year term, he practiced law in Claremore and Miami, Oklahoma, until his retirement in 1938. In 1886 he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy from Kingston, Kansas, to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
