Sarah E. Benford (1849-1923) was born in Monmouth, Illinois, and died in
Denver, Colorado. Benford became interested in Christian Science in 1885 after receiving
Christian Science treatment through prayer from Jennie B. Fenn, a student of Mary Baker
Eddy's. Later on she studied with Eddy, completing the Primary (1887) and Obstetrical
(1888) classes. She joined the Christian Scientist Association in June 1887 and joined
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, in July 1893 and was a
member until her passing. Benford was a Christian Science practitioner and teacher and
was listed in the directory of
The Christian Science Journal
from 1890 until 1922. She contributed to the early growth of Christian Science in
Beatrice, Nebraska.
