John H. Belcher (1828-1901) was born and died in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a career soldier who first enlisted in 1864, serving in the United States Army Quartermaster's Department (QMD) during the Civil War. After the war he continued to serve in the QMD, promoted to major in 1883 and retired in 1892. He became interested in Christian Science in early 1886, while living in Denver, Colorado, and wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and other works by Eddy.
