Edward Beecher (1803-1895) was born in East Hampton, New York, and died
in Brooklyn, New York. He was a Congregational minister and the older brother of Henry
Ward Beecher. Edward Beecher graduated from Yale in 1822 and was ordained in 1826, after
which he became the pastor of the Park Street Church in Boston. In 1830, he was
appointed president of Illinois College in Knoxville, Illinois. After resigning in 1844,
he then held pastorates at several Congregational churches in Boston, Galesburg,
Illinois, and Brooklyn, New York. Beecher was the grandfather of Isabella A. Beecher, a
student of Mary Baker Eddy's.
