Leila G. Bedell (1838-1914) was born in Crown Point, Indiana, and died in
Tryon, North Carolina. Bedell was a medical doctor who graduated from the Boston
University School of Medicine in 1878 and practiced in Chicago after graduation. She
served as President of the Chicago Women's Club from 1885-1888 and led several campaigns
advocating for the rights of women and children. In 1885, she published
The Abdominal Brain, a book discussing the workings of the nervous system.
There is no record of Bedell studying with Mary Baker Eddy or uniting with the Church of
Christ (Scientist).
