Martha E. C. Bates (1839-1905) was born in Michigan and died in Traverse City, Michigan. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University (1865) and for many years worked as a journalist and editor for the Grand Traverse Herald. She became interested in Christian Science in early 1885 and wrote to Mary Baker Eddy about studying at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College.
