Mary A. Batchelder (1839-1897) was born in Winslow, Maine, and died in
Boston, Massachusetts. She became interested in Christian Science through Julia Bartlett
and was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, having taken Primary (1885) and Normal (1886)
classes at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. She joined the Christian Scientist
Association on October 7, 1885, and she was an active member until just before she
withdrew in June 1888. Batchelder also painted a full length portrait of Eddy which hung
in a reception room at Eddy's home at 571 Columbus Avenue, Boston.
