Rufus H. Bartlett (1855-1905) was born in Morris, Illinois, and died in Chicago, Illinois. He was a medical doctor who graduated from Rock River Seminary (1875) and from Rush Medical College (1879). After graduation, he practiced in Chicago, eventually becoming chief medical examiner for the Aetna Life Insurance Company. In 1885, Bartlett became famous for a brief time when he received from a patient what newspapers described as an ancient copy of the New Testament. Bartlett's article on the subject, "A Divine Book," was reprinted in the April 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal.
